Two amazing collections of RAF memorabilia

We are thrilled to announce an extraordinary opportunity for collectors and history enthusiasts alike: the Bill Poulton memorabilia collection. This remarkable collection chronicles the harrowing and heroic journey of Sergeant Bill Poulton, a 22-year-old bomb-aimer of a Halifax bomber from RAF Snaith, whose aircraft was downed during a World War Two mission over Germany.

On the night of June 21st/22nd, 1943, Sergeant Poulton and his crew faced the chaos and peril of a major attack on Krefeld. Following a direct hit by flak that disabled two of their four engines, the resilient pilot managed to navigate the beleaguered aircraft into Belgian airspace, where the crew was ordered to bail out. Poulton's fortunes shifted as he descended safely to the ground, evading capture from searching German forces thanks to the unyielding kindness of local residents who assisted him in reaching the underground resistance.

What followed was an incredible fourteen months filled with tension and danger. Poulton, armed with forged documents, transitioned from safe house to safe house while living under the constant threat of discovery—at one point residing in an apartment building frequented by Gestapo officers. Tragically, his escape came to an end when he was betrayed by a Belgian double agent, leading to his capture and subsequent incarceration in various POW camps. Defying the odds once again, Poulton ultimately escaped and was liberated by Russian forces in January 1945.

The Bill Poulton collection is particularly special, featuring his inscribed Caterpillar Club lapel pin, emblematic of those whose lives were saved by parachutes after bailing out of troubled aircraft. This rare item is accompanied by an extensive archive that vividly recounts Poulton's dramatic saga. Within the collection, collectors will find copies of the RAF debrief upon his return, detailed accounts of the Krefeld raid, interviews conducted by the media post-war, and even his false identification card that safeguarded him during his time in Belgium.

This collection serves not only as a tribute to Sergeant Poulton’s resilience and bravery but also as a significant artifact of wartime history. Join us in celebrating this incredible story and the fascinating memorabilia that reflects both the trials and triumphs of those who served. The auction also features a unique piece of history - an album of photographs and memorabilia belonging to Jack Keay, a distinguished RAF pilot. Keay's military career began in the 1930s, serving in Iraq and India before returning to England to fly with Coastal Command during the Second World War.

This album provides an exceptional glimpse into the early days of the RAF, showcasing not only the aircraft of the era, particularly biplanes, but also the vibrant lives of the people Keay encountered throughout his service. His keen interest in photography allowed him to document experiences that would otherwise be lost to time. The images reflect the cultural landscapes of foreign locations and the camaraderie among service members, offering an insightful perspective into both military and civilian life during a transformative period in history.

As collectors and history enthusiasts examine this remarkable album, they will uncover not only the story of a dedicated pilot but also the broader narrative of the Royal Air Force and its significant role in global conflicts. This item is sure to resonate with those who appreciate the intertwining tales of aviation, personal experience, and the historical context of the 20th century.
