August auction recap
Although we’re currently working very hard on the next auction, we thought we’d do a quick recap on some of the great results and nice surprises from the last auction in August.
Undoubtedly, the surprise of the auction was the large collection of vintage bubblegum cards, which achieved an impressive hammer price of £1,000. Alongside this, a vintage Paragon Star China Beatrice Mallet jug garnered a hammer price of £550.
As anticipated, the pieces by Robert ‘Mousey’ Thompson performed admirably, with the card box reaching £330 and the pair of table lamps selling for £380. Other standout results included a 22ct gold Millennium £5 coin encased in its original packaging, which brought in £2,200. A limited edition collection of three proof gold sovereigns from the Royal Mint also made a considerable impression, achieving £1,500. Additionally, a unique 1912 ‘Titanic year’ gold sovereign mounted on a necklace fetched a respectable £540.
In the realm of ceramics, a Jasperware cheese dome sold for £200, while a stunning Royal Crown Derby Midsummer Hare with a gold stopper realized £170. Six exquisite Shelley china cabinet cups and saucers featuring gold rose detail achieved a hammer price of £140, and five Royal Albert Lavender Rose dinner tureens sold for £120. Four separate lots of Spode Italian pieces generated strong results, selling for £100, £140, £175, and £65.
A striking mantle clock by John Ellis of London saw the hammer fall at £650, and a beautiful sterling silver and enamel Smiths mantle clock brought in £125. In addition, a finely crafted and highly detailed antique French sterling silver dish from 1901 sold for £380.
Within the diverse assemblage of military attire, an original 1943 WW2 Era Battledress Blouse by Burtons of Leeds reached an impressive hammer price of £140.
The audio equipment collection turned out to be as remarkable as anticipated, with one lot amounting to £650 from various components. Notably, the Quad, Garrard, and Technics lots all performed exceptionally well.
Vintage tools and woodworking equipment continue to garner interest, exemplified by three vintage wooden workbenches collectively fetching over £200.
The furniture segment also experienced strong sales this month, highlighted by a Mid to Late 20th Century Teak table by McIntosh & Co., which commanded £170. In addition, a striking Victorian Mahogany fold top games table, elevated on four carved bracket feet with a beautifully turned central column, achieved £145. While an intriguing 1930s Deco Style Drinks cabinet, adorned with attractive inlay decoration, concluded with a hammer price of £95.
Overall, this auction delivered not only excellent returns for vendors but also compelling bargains for buyers.
